What your public IP address tells you
Your public IP address is the internet-facing address websites use to send data back to your connection. It can identify the network provider and an approximate region, but it does not reveal your precise home address or GPS location.
Need to check another address? Use IP address lookup to enter a public IPv4 or IPv6 address and view its network report.
How this checker works
Your browser asks SpeedTestOne's same-origin network endpoint what source address reached the service. The page then looks up the registered network operator and approximate IP-based location. It does not request browser GPS permission.
Public IP versus private IP
The public address is visible to internet services and may be shared by several devices through your router or carrier. Private addresses such as 192.168.x.x and 10.x.x.x identify devices only inside a local network.
IPv4 and IPv6
IPv4 uses four decimal groups, while IPv6 uses a longer hexadecimal format and a much larger address space. A connection may support one version or both, and different websites can be reached over different versions.
Location and privacy limits
IP location is an estimate based on network routing and registration data. VPNs, mobile carriers and corporate gateways can appear in another city. Only the provider can associate an assigned address with a customer account.
My IP address FAQ
What is my public IP address?
Your public IP address is the internet-facing address that websites and online services receive from your connection. It is normally assigned by your internet provider or, when you use one, by a VPN or proxy service.
Can an IP address reveal my exact location?
No. IP geolocation usually estimates a country, region or city and may point to a provider gateway instead of your device. It does not provide a precise home address or GPS position.
Does a VPN change the IP address websites see?
Usually, yes. A VPN sends your traffic through its server, so websites normally see the VPN server's public IP and approximate location instead of the address assigned directly by your provider.
Why does my public IP address change?
Many providers assign dynamic addresses that can change after a reconnect, router restart or lease update. Switching between WiFi, mobile data and a VPN can also expose a different public IP.
What is the difference between a public and private IP address?
A public IP identifies your connection on the internet. A private IP is used only inside a local network, commonly in ranges such as 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x, and is not directly reachable from the public internet.
