Understand your network speed test

Four numbers. One clear picture.

Speed alone does not tell the whole story. These measurements reveal how your connection will feel during everyday use.

Download speed

How quickly your device receives data. It matters most for video, browsing and downloads.

Higher is better · Mbps

Upload speed

How quickly you send data. Important for video calls, cloud backups and live streaming.

Higher is better · Mbps

Ping

The round-trip response time. Low ping makes games and calls feel more immediate.

Lower is better · ms

Jitter

How much latency changes between samples. Low jitter means a steadier connection.

What can your connection handle?

Turn Mbps into real life.

Requirements vary by service and device. Use these practical ranges as a starting point, then watch for latency and stability too.

Before you test

  1. 1

    Pause heavy activity

Stop downloads, cloud backups and video on other devices when you want to measure the connection available to this device.

  2. 2

    Choose WiFi or cable intentionally

A wired test shows what reaches your router. A WiFi test shows the experience at your current location.

  3. 3

    Run more than once

Compare morning and evening tests. A repeated slowdown is more useful than one unusually high or low result.

Common questions

Internet speed test FAQ

What is a good internet speed?

For one person, 25–50 Mbps is comfortable for browsing and HD streaming. Households with several users, 4K video or large downloads usually benefit from 100 Mbps or more.

Why is my WiFi speed lower than my plan?

WiFi adds distance, interference and device limitations between you and the router. Your advertised plan is normally the maximum speed to your router, not a guarantee for every wireless device.

How accurate is this network speed test?

The network speed test compares available authorized measurement nodes, uses the lowest-latency healthy route, and runs adaptive transfers plus latency checks while the line is busy. A global anycast edge is always available as fallback. Results can still vary by route, device and WiFi conditions, so repeat controlled tests when diagnosing a problem.

Does the test use data?

Yes. Measuring throughput requires transferring test data. A complete run adapts to the connection and is capped to avoid unlimited usage, but mobile-data users should still be mindful of their allowance.

Is this the Ookla speed test?

No. SpeedTestOne is an independent internet speed test and is not affiliated with Ookla or Speedtest.net. Company and product names belong to their respective owners.
